The Ugly Color

Innovative Approaches to Color and Design #2: The Ugly Color

The Ugly Color

Have you ever looked at a painting, a swatch of fabric, a collage, or a patch of beadwork and thought, “Well, those colors just don’t do it for me!”  This session will provide a framework for analyzing how colors interact.  We will also try to figure out why some colors or color combination just feel ‘wrong,’ then consider what (if anything!) we can do change the way that we look at these ‘ugly’ colors and control the effect that they have on our work…at least on our beadwork! 2 1/2 hour class.

Prerequisite: Color Awareness, Designing with Beads and the four Applied Color & Design topics.

This class will investigate how color communicates messages, evokes predictable reactions and affects our moods and our emotions.  We will look at color from a number of different perspectives including cultural, physical, physiological and psychological.  And we will consider how we can use color in our beading or other artwork to set a tone, communicate a message, or evoke a response.  This 2.5 hour class is fun and surprisingly thought-provoking!

Color Awareness is a pre-requisite for this class.

Designing with Beads

Designing with Beads

There’s more to making jewelry than just putting together a bunch of beads, and somehow we all know that instinctively.  This class is designed to give you some vocabulary to understand what you know intuitively… to introduce design elements, the basic building blocks of all artistic media.  What are these design elements?  How are they used? How do they apply to beading?  How can I use them to make my jewelry more interesting?  Hands-on exercises in class will help you focus on practical application.  This class, for beginners as well as experienced beaders, will give you a new perspective in creating and designing jewelry with all kinds of beads including seed beads.
